It was 25 years ago that a revered performance dynasty was spawned with the display at the Frankfurt motor show of the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG, the inaugural performance model jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and the AMG brand.

In 2018, Mercedes-Benz celebrates this milestone at the annual Motorclassica exhibition in Melbourne with the Australian premiere of the latest edition of the C-Class performance family, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S. Fans will be able to view the yet-to-be locally released AMG C 63 S and its predecessor, an original C 36 AMG, amid a cavalcade of both classic and contemporary Mercedes-Benz vehicles specially convened for Motorclassica.

The genre-defining C 36 AMG packed a 3.6-litre inline six-cylinder engine making 206 kW, plus a four-speed automatic transmission. With modified suspension and dampers, bigger brakes, and the addition of traction control, it was a potent combination in its day for a street-focused sports sedan.

Its modern-day successor, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S, makes 375 kW from a bi-turbo 4.0-litre V8, utilising a new AMG DYNAMICS package that optimises lateral dynamics and maximises cornering traction, along with AMG Traction Control allowing preselection of the slip on the rear axle in one of nine levels. Comparing and contrasting the potent pair serves to highlight the continuous development of the Mercedes-AMG brand over the subsequent 25 years.

In June 1996, the C 36 AMG started a tradition when the Affalterbach-based brand provided the official safety car in Formula 1 for the first time. That continues, with the AMG GT R leading the field in 2018.

The G-Class also celebrates an important milestone. Affectionately known as the ‘G-Wagen’, this year marks the legendary model’s 35th anniversary since going on sale in Australia. Another thrill for Motorclassica attendees will be the opportunity to examine the latest iteration – the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 – alongside an original Australian-delivered 1983 G 300 GD.

Although the imposing AMG G 63 packs a potent bi-turbo V8 engine and a swathe of technological, safety and luxury features, onlookers may also be struck by the similarities between the pair, from the trademark styling to design features such as Page 2 exposed door handles and indicator lights.

Mercedes-Benz, in its sixth year as a key partner of Motorclassica, will also show off two notable sports car stars – a beautifully restored Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
Roadster, plus its most potent track-focused vehicle today, the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

Mercedes-Benz Australia-Pacific Managing Director and CEO Horst von Sanden said the annual Motorclassica exhibition helps to remind enthusiasts not only of new models and cutting-edge developments, but just as importantly to reflect on the fascinating evolution of those vehicles and an industry that stretches back to the first car invented by Karl Benz in 1886. “As a brand, we have a fascinating history that stretches back over 130 years. We are proud to be a global leader in automotive development for so many years, but we also consider it very important to sometimes stop and celebrate milestones, and remember where we have come from,” Mr von Sanden said.

“This year we observe the anniversaries of two models that are just as important to us today as they were when they were first released. In fact, you’d have to say that
these are two of the most-wanted AMG vehicles today – a real fantasy garage for most people!”
